Question from a bride to be in Kilkenny:

Hi Anna,

I’m getting married in 10 months and wonder what would be the best way to
prepare my skin for the big day?  Should I be getting facials regularly or are there products you could
recommend for oily skin?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Anna:

Hi…Thank you for your question in preparation for your big day!

The key to preparing your skin is to firstly look at your daily routine to control your excess oil production. A cleanser is always the most important to start the day to remove surface dead skin cells and oil build up.

Toner can control PH level or a more active toner will control excess oil. Because the consistency of toner is like water it can penetrate into the pores to dissolve the trapped oil and control oil production for a few hours after use.

Salicylic Acid is one of the most important ingredients in treating oily skin. It is a gentle acid that exfoliates and dissolves excess oil and can be used daily in your cleanser, toner or in a lotion to maintain oil control throughout the day. Retinol also exfoliates but at a deeper level than salicylic.

It will control oil production deeper in the skins sebaceous glands while also improving red blemishes and scarring caused by acne and spots.

I recommend keeping daily creams and lotions to a minimum to avoid clogging the surface and always try to use oil free creams and water based serums to avoid a build up.

Moisturiser is dependent on each persons skin type. Most oily skin types do not require moisturiser daily and may only use a serum and sun protection. We recommend to only use if necessary and to use oil free non-comedogenic, water-based serums, lotions and creams.

Most cosmetic products available over the counter have large molecules that sit and clog the surface layer of the skin so best avoided if you have congestion or acne. Cosmeceuticals on the other hand have small molecules that don’t clog and penetrate the layers to treat skin concerns.

If you commit to a daily skin routine you can achieve amazing results in 6-12 weeks. If you want to combine treatments to treat pores and improve the glow to your skin then we recommend a course of Salicylic Skin Peels or Medical Microdermabrasion every 2-4 weeks in combination with your homecare skin routine a few months prior to your wedding day.

Question from a frustrated girl:

Hey Anna,

I’m in my late 20s but still keep getting break outs. I have quite greasy skin and still haven’t found the right product for my skin, is there anything you could recommend?
Sheena.

Anna:

Hi Sheena,

I will recommend and advise you on options to reduce your oil production and control excess causing
your break outs.

The cause of your acne break outs and congestion is caused by an accumulation of oil and dead skin cells in the skin, the key is to reduce excess oil and dead skin cells by controlling the production of oil under the skin so that we can reduce oiliness and breakouts.

To achieve this I recommend you use Salicylic Acid which is one of the most important ingredients in treating acne and congestion. It is a gentle acid that exfoliates and dissolves excess oil and can be used as a cleanser, toner or in a lotion to maintain oil control throughout the day.

A cleanser is always the most important to start the day to remove surface dead skin cells and oil build up. Toner can control PH level or a more active toner will control excess oil. Because the consistency of toner is like water it can penetrate into the pores to
dissolve the trapped oil and control oil production for a few hours after use.

Exfoliation is vital to remove a build up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin which clogs pores and blocks oil inside the pores, which can get infected and cause pimples. Using a scrub or masque 1-3 times a week will help to exfoliate superficial layers of dead skin.

I recommend keeping moistursier and serums to a minimum to avoid clogging the surface and always try to use oil free creams and water based serums to avoid a build up under the surface of your skin.

Retinol also exfoliates but at a deeper level than salicylic. It will control oil production deeper in the skins sebaceous glands while also improving red blemishes and scarring caused by acne and spots.

I recommend you try to use mineral makeup either a liquid or powder based formula as its oil free and contains no talc with is very important if you have oily skin. Cosmetic makeup can contain oils, primers and talc which blocks your pores and traps your oil for hours inside the pores which causes infection and pimples.

With so many cosmetic product on the market it can be difficult to see what exactly is contained in some cosmetic products so try to get as much information as possible before choosing. Most cosmetic products available over the counter have hidden oils and due to their large molecule size are not designed to penetrate therefore sit and clog the surface layer of the skin.

Cosmeceutical skin products on the other hand are made with small molecules that don’t clog and can penetrate the skin layers to treat your skin concerns. Some cosmetic over the counter Serums and creams can contain oils so be careful to close water-based serums and oil free creams to avoid build up of oil and congestion.
