This year’s Emmy Awards host has been announced

The host of this year’s 69th Primetime Emmy Awards has been announced.

Stephen Colbert will be taking on hosting duties for the ceremony for the very first time, CBS confirmed on Monday.

And The Late Show star didn’t waste any time poking fun at President Donald Trump’s administration after the news was revealed.

“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period,” Stephen joked, referencing what White House press secretary Sean Spicer said about the inauguration. “Both in person and around the globe.”

CBS Entertainment’s executive vice president Jack Sussman said in a statement: “We’re excited to kick off the new season and celebrate the top achievements in television with Stephen Colbert as host of the Primetime Emmys.

“Stephen is the ultimate master of ceremonies with award-winning creative talents, and as we’ve seen the past few months, he has a fearless passion for live television.”

He added: “We look forward to honoring television’s best while entertaining audiences with the creative energy and sharp comedy of Stephen Colbert.”

Stephen took over from David Letterman as host of The Late Show on CBS in September 2015 after nine years of starring on The Colbert Report.

Last year’s Emmys were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, while Andy Samberg, Seth Meyers, Neil Patrick Harris, Jane Lynch and Jimmy Fallon have also hosted in the past few years.

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 17th, with nominations announced on July 13th.
