American Idol is officially returning to television

When American Idol came to an end last year, fans had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn’t the last we would see of the hit show.

And after months of rumours, it has officially been announced that the singing competition series is returning to television.

It was confirmed on Good Morning America on Tuesday that American Idol – which previously aired on Fox – will be rebooted at ABC.

Variety reports that the show could kick off in March 2018, and may air on Sunday nights.

“American Idol on ABC… that has a nice ring to it,” Disney/ABC president Ben Sherwood said in a statement.

“Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC’s lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol.”

It remains to be seen who will be on the judging panel, which in the past has drawn in A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Ellen DeGeneres, Steven Tyler and Keith Urban.

Fans will be hoping to see Ryan Seacrest back as the host, but he has admitted he’s not sure if he will be able to take on hosting duties after joining Live! alongside Kelly Ripa.

American Idol first aired in 2002 and has produced stars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson.
