Selena Gomez reveals that she expected the backlash that came along with the show 13 Reasons Why.
The singer was a producer on the show, and was originally meant to star in a movie adaptation of Jay Asher’s novel, before it became a TV series.
Speaking to the Associated Press, she admitted that she expected there to be some backlash due to the nature of the source material.
“We stayed very true to the book, and that’s initially what Jay Asher created, a beautifully tragic yet complicated and suspenseful story.”

The Love You Like A Love Song singer continued, “I think we wanted to do it justice, and (controversy) is gonna come no matter what.
“It’s a not an easy subject but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing and I’m overwhelmed and very proud of it.”
13 Reasons Why has caused a lot of discussion due to its themes of teenage self-harm and suicide.
Paris Jackson urged people who were struggling with mental health issues themselves to avoid the show, calling it “triggering”, while mental health group Headspace labelled it potentially “risky” and “distressing”.
