Director Christopher Nolan defends casting Harry Styles in Dunkirk: ‘He was perfect’

Christopher Nolan has defended casting Harry Styles in upcoming film Dunkirk once again, insisting that he was “perfect” for the role.

The director admitted that he wasn’t aware of the height of the One Direction star’s fame before casting him in the WWII drama, and compared the controversy surrounding his decision to when he cast Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

The filmmaker’s decision to cast Heath as Batman’s enemy raised a lot of eyebrows, but the actor went on to posthumously win an Oscar for the role.

“When I cast Heath Ledger as the Joker, it raised a lot of eyebrows and caused a lot of comment,” Christopher told Entertainment Tonight.

“I have to trust my instincts, and Harry was perfect for this part.”

The 23-year-old singer plays a soldier in the film, which is set for release on July 21.

“I was new to Harry. I mean, I’ve heard his name from my kids, but I wasn’t really familiar with him.

“What I was seeing was a very charismatic guy who clearly had a truthfulness and a subtlety in his ability to perform as a film actor,” he added.

The film also stars Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and Kenneth Branagh.
