Over the last year, a host of amazing films landed in Irish cinemas such as La La Land, Deadpool and The Jungle Book just to name a few.
2017 is shaping up to be another great year for film with many more yet to be announced.
We love a trip to the cinema at Goss.ie, so we’ve compiled a list of the top 17 films to see in 2017.
1. Beauty And The Beast
When it was first rumoured that Emma Watson was set to take on the iconic role of Belle in the live-action remake of Beauty And The Beast, fans rejoiced and gushed how she is the perfect fit for the character.
The story is a classic tale many have grown up with – a young woman bravely saves her father’s life and becomes a prisoner to a monstrous prince, but as they share their worlds, they fall in love.
The film stars Downtown Abbey’s Dan Stevens as the beast, Prince Eric, and is set for release in Ireland on March 17th, 2017.
2. 50 Shades Darker
Jamie Dornan returns to the second 50 Shades film as the dashing Christian Grey with actress Dakota Johnson by his side as Anastasia Steele.
The new film follows on from where 50 Shades Of Grey left off as Christian does his best to win over Anastasia again – but there are new characters trying to prevent their romance from blossoming.
The film adaption of E.L. James’ novel hits Irish cinemas February 10th, 2017 – just in time for Valentines Day.
3. Baywatch
Hollywood hunk Zac Efron stars alongside former WWE star Dwayne Johnson in one of the sexiest films of 2017 in the remake of a 90s TV classic, Baywatch.
The film is one of the world’s most anticipated films – and no, not for the story line, though it does looks pretty hilarious.
So prepare for red swimsuits, slow motion running and plenty of action for when Baywatch hits Irish cinemas on the 12th of May, 2017.
4. A Monster Calls
There is a lot to be said for a good children’s film that also draws in adults, and Liam Neeson’s A Monster Calls does just that.
The film is based off of the book of the same name and stars the Antrim native as a scary but kind tree monster imagined up by a young boy as his mother battles cancer.
If you don’t mind shedding a tear in public, the moving story is in Irish cinemas now.
5. The Lego Batman Movie
To truly forget the horrors of 2016 and start 2017 off with a chuckle, The Lego Batman Movie is the hero Ireland deserves.
Arrested Development’s Will Arnett stars at the leading superhero as he meets all the classic characters from the comic book series – Robin the Boy Wonder, Barbara Gordon who later becomes Batgirl, the sassy as ever butler Alfred and, of course, The Joker.
Grab some friends and have a laugh when The Lego Batman Movie hits Irish cinemas on February 10th, 2017.
6. Dunkirk
Harry Style’s will make his professional acting debut next year in the WWII action-thriller, Dunkirk.
Starring alongside Cork native Cillian Murphy and British actor Tom Hardy, the trio star as allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France who find themselves surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle.
The trailer alone will give you chills, and you can watch the powerful film in Irish cinemas from July 21st, 2017.
7. Justice League
There’s no doubt about it, the upcoming films from DC are truly rivalling the standard that Marvel has set – and Ben Affleck’s Justice League is set to raise the bar even more.
When Henry Cavill first took on the role of Superman, DC fans everywhere shook with excitement, and then Ben became Batman.
On the 17th of November, 2017, comic book lovers can race to the cinema and watch some of the world’s favourite superheroes like Wonder Woman, The Flash and Aquaman, played by the handsome Jason Momoa, come together for the first time.
8. Silence
Liam Neeson stars alongside Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver in Martin Scorsese’s new film, Silence.
The story is based on the novel by Shusaku Endo of the same name that tells of a priest (Liam) who publicly renounced his faith in Japan – so two priests (Andrew and Adam) must travel to the Asian land where Catholicism is outlawed to track him down.
From the trailer, the film looks intense and powerful – and you will be able to watch it in Irish cinemas nationwide on January 6th, 2017.
9. T2: Trainspotting
Ewan McGregor is back in his famed Trainspotting role as Renton in the upcoming sequel.
Although it’s not known if he will be crawling out of a toilet again, the Danny Boyle film is set 20 years laters and appears to be just as visually captivating and fast-paced as the first movie.
Get ready for the rollercoaster of a film on January 27th when it hits Irish cinemas nationwide.
10. Free Fire
Martin Scorsese has another film set for release in 2017 and it stars another Irish man, Cillian Murphy.
Free Fire is an action-packed movie about play two Irishmen in the middle of an arms deal gone wrong.
The film also stars American Actress Brie Larson and is set for release on March 17th, 2017, in Irish cinemas nationwide.
11. Trespass Against Us
Michael Fassbender has teamed up with Irish acting legend Brendan Gleeson in a new movie about strong family bonds.
Trespass Against Us follows family life in an Irish traveller community where to get by, they have turned to a life of crime – but Michael’s character Chad Cutler has had enough.
The striking film, which has been praised by critics at film festivals, hits Irish cinemas on the 3rd of March, 2017.
12. The Breadwinner
Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon have worked with American actress Angelina Jolie to create an empowering film for young children.
The Breadwinner will help promote and highlight education and empowerment for women in the Middle East and the mother-of-six to said to be really involved in giving feedback and advice on the making of the film.
There is no exact release date yet but it will be released in 2017 to selected Irish cinemas.
13. The Mummy
Brendan Fraiser has hung up his Mummy hat and passed on the torch to Tom Cruise who now fronts the action-packed film.
In the latest film from the series, The Mummy tells the story of an ancient princess who is woken from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her hate towards humanity that has grown over a thousand years and terrors of biblical proportions.
No doubt this will be amazing to watch in 3D so get down to your local Irish cinema on the 9th of June, 2017 to experience it.
14. Star Wars: Episode VIII
No trailer has yet been released for Star Wars: Episode VIII, but what we do know is that we can expect to see a lot more of Luke Skywalker and Tom Hardy is rumoured to make a cameo
The cast of Star Wars were photographed in 2016 in Ireland as they shoot the latest film and fans are eagerly anticipating the first trailer which is set to be released soon and will reveal the film’s title.
Stars Wars: Episode VIII on the 15th of December, 2017.
15. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
In the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales welcomes back the return of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa.
Also set to rejoin the cast is Keira Knightley who was spotted on the British set where some parts of the film is filmed.
The film is set for Irish release on May 26th, 2017.
16. Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 2
There is only one word to explain Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 – Groot.
That’s right, Groot is back in the form of Baby Groot, the adorable little tree alien who stole the world’s hearts when the first trailer for the second film dropped.
Chris Pratt is back as Star Lord with his brave team as they protect the universe again from more extraterrestrial threats, but not without cracking a few hilarious jokes in between.
Prepare to awe at the little scamp that is Baby Groot when he and his team hit Irish cinemas nationwide on April 28th, 2017.
17. Kong: Skull Island
Another remake of the classic King Kong story, Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson join Samual L. Jackson in a jungle adventure.
The film tells the story of King Kong’s origin on his home island and how he became king of his land.
Kong: Skull Island hits Irish cinemas 10 March in 2017.
