Newstalk threatens to sue RTE after refusal to show Pat Kenny advert

Newstalk have threatened to sue RTE – after they refused to air an advert for Pat Kenny’s show.

The TV promos feature the former Late Late Show host and his new radio colleagues in their Move the Dial campaign.

However RTE bosses have told Newstalk they won’t be running the adverts, claiming they were in breach of the station’s “codes and regulations”

But Newstalk believe they are afraid of losing listeners and have vowed to sue and make a formal complaint to the Competition Authority.

Chief executive Gerard Whelan said: “RTE’s decision not to accept the ad is motivated solely by its determination to curb the listenership of a competitor. We submitted an ad and RTE took an arbitrary decision to reject it.

“RTE is subsidised by the taxpayer and in 2012, it generated a licence fee income of approximately €181million.

“It also took in advertising revenue of approximately €156million in the same year. Now they want to stamp out the competition.”

It comes as the battle between the two stations intensifies after Newstalk poached Pat last year in a €2million deal.
