Aidan O’Mahony insists he ‘won’t be a celebrity’ after Dancing With The Stars

Aidan O’Mahony has insisted that he will no longer be seen as a “celebrity” once Dancing With The Stars comes to an end.

The 36-year-old, who welcomed his daughter Lucia just two weeks ago, admitted that he’s looking forward to getting back to reality.

“I’m just a normal country lad so I’m looking forward to getting back to reality when this is all over.

“I’ll be back on the beat on Tuesday, back to studying for my degree (in Strength and Conditioning) and I’ll be back to being a dad. I’ll be back to being me, I won’t be a celebrity,” he told the Irish Sun.

“Dancing with the Stars has been fantastic and I won’t forget it. But normality is nice too.”

The ex-Kerry footballer also opened up about his pal Dayl Cronin being booted off the show last weekend.

“I’ve been living in Dublin with Dayl for four months so to see him so emotional after learning he was leaving the competition was awful. I felt emotional myself, I felt I had crushed a young lad’s dream. I’ve played in finals and I know what it’s like to win and to lose.

“I think people see that I’m a guy who came in with no skills and is improving every week.

“Dayl — and I genuinely mean this — was to me the winner already. He’ll go on and be a big star in the UK or here with his music and I told him not to forget about me when that happens. He has a big future,” he gushed.

Although Aidan is prepared to give it his all in the final tonight, he understands that Fair City actress Aoibhin Garrihy and Red Rock star Denise McCormack are the favourites to win.

“I just want to perform the best I can, win or lose. I haven’t thought about the Glitterball. There’s no pressure on me. The two girls are the favourites and rightly so. You have to enjoy it. You can’t go to Croke Park on All-Ireland Day and not enjoy it. If you’re beaten, so be it.

“When I first came into the show, I’d no expectation. If I’d known how much work it would be, I probably wouldn’t have done it. That said, it’s been a fantastic experience.

“I’ll go back to Kerry on the Monday and I’ll put on the uniform on Tuesday and that’s me. That’s who I am. I’m not going to be in more TV series. This was trial and error. I think you have to be cut out for TV,” he added.

Watch the final of Dancing With The Stars on RTÉ One tonight at 6.30pm.
