EXCLUSIVE! Kiesza says Hozier’s powerful lyrics influenced her next album

Kiesza has revealed that Irish singer Hozier influenced the writing of her next album.

The singer shot to fame back in 2014 with her hit song Hideaway, which smashed charts all of the world.

She will be coming to Ireland for the very first time, to play at the BARE In The Woods festival, and Goss.ie caught up with her and got chatting about Hozier.

“I’m such a fan of Hozier. That’s why I covered the song Take Me To Church, because it really inspired me.

“I think he even influenced some of the writing on my next album, just because his lyrics hit me so hard.”

The singer also admitted that she would never turn down the opportunity to collaborate with the Wexford singer.

“It reminded me how powerful and strong that lyrics can be. I think with a lot of pop music people don’t even listen to the lyrics at all.

“And when he put that song out, it made me listen to everything and I was like, ‘wow, ok that’s really important.’

“I would love to collaborate with him, I would never turn that opportunity down.”

The 28-year-old told Goss.ie that the writing on this album is substantially different to her older music, because of a tragic event in her personal life.

“I went through a really tough time, I lost my best friend to cancer. Just right as my last tour was ending.

“So I couldn’t get back into writing for a while, and then when I finally did – I was just approaching everything from a different place.

“I’d really been changed by the whole process, of losing her and then having to heal and get back into life.”

Kiesza’s video for Hideaway has over a whopping 77 million views on Youtube, and it was all done in one take.

Although it was part of her artistic vision to do it like this – she said that it was also because she couldn’t afford a video editor.

“It was all in one take. It’s just, I couldn’t afford a video editor at the time,” she laughed.

“It takes a lot of planning, I guess it is as hard as you think it is but once you put it all together you say, ‘oh that wasn’t so hard.'”
