Gay Byrne reveals he is ‘too sick’ to miss broadcasting

Gay Byrne has revealed that he is “too sick” to miss broadcasting.

The RTE icon and national treasure took a break from the air waves in January 2017 and has not returned since.

The 82-year-old radio broadcaster is currently battling prostate cancer and is recovering from a double hip replacement.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror last Thursday, Gay said that he is feeling positive but wishes to focus on his health rather than returning to work.

Gay told the Irish Mirror, “No [I don’t miss working] at all. Not at the moment anyway. I’m too sick to miss it. I’m too lacking in energy to miss it. People have been amazingly kind and gentle and asking how I am. It’s from all over the nation.”

However, Gay is not letting his ill health get the better of him as he continued, “I don’t want to paint a sorrowful picture.”

Speaking to the Irish Sun last March, Gay also gave positive comments, he said, “I’ve had the most wonderful, fantastic, robust, good health all my broadcasting life,” he told listeners. “It’s my turn now… Many, many people [are] much worse off. Thank you for your good wishes”.
