Kathleen Watkins reveals Gay Byrne’s ‘medication is heavy’

Kathleen Watkins has revealed that Gay Byrne’s medication is heavy at the moment.

The RTE star announced live on air that he has prostate cancer – but now his wife has said that he’s also suffered fractures and had to have two hip replacements.

“Gay had fractures and is recovering from not one but two hip replacements which took place within two weeks,” she said.

The author said she and her husband are hoping for the best and Gay has had friends coming to see him.

“He is walking quite well now. The medication is heavy but we are doing the best we can. We hope for the best,” she told The Irish Sun.

“Friends have been coming and going. Ryan [Tubridy] and Joe [Duffy] and his producer Roger Childs [on TV show The Meaning Of Life]. The lads were terrific.

“They had a great time together. On Saturday we were out with another eight from RTE so we are doing outings like that.”

Kathleen also spoke about prostate cancer and has a very positive outlook on Gay’s situation.

“You have to remember there are a huge collection of fellas who have survived prostate cancer.

“They all survived and are doing well and why couldn’t that apply to me? You don’t have any choice but to have a positive outlook.

“You have to have the best outlook possible,” she added.
