Nidge's softer side: 'Becoming a dad made me realise suffering of kids'

Tom Vaughan Lawlor has told how becoming a dad has made him realise the suffering of less well off children.

The Love/Hate star – who has a two-year-old boy Freddie with wife Claire Cox – feels lucky to be able to support his family.

And Tom, who plays Nidge in the RTE series, wants to use his fame to help underprivileged kids with charity Barnardos.

He said: “When we had our son Freddie, it’s that thing of understanding how vulnerable children can be.

“We’re very fortunate to have the ability to have the opportunities we have. We see children that don’t have it.

“They have economic and social degrees of  poverty so, because of my son, you realise you want kids to fulfil their potential and you want to make sure you have those opportunities.

“I think money is tight all over. Charity work is taking a battering in terms of other organisations. The work Barnardos do is vital all over Ireland.”

Tom was speaking as he took part in Cadbury’s Egg Run in Merrion Square Park in aid of Barnardos.
