RTÉ to document Christy Dignam’s battle with cancer in new programme

RTÉ are set to document Christy Dignam’s battle with cancer in a new programme.

Station bosses commissioned the docu-series after the Aslan frontman, who has been battling a rare cancer called Amyloidosis since 2013, gained over 5.3million views on Facebook performing the Green Fields Of France with Finbar Furey on The Late Late Show last January.

The programme will follow the singer’s battle to overcome his illness by performing at Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens on July 7, which will be Aslan’s biggest gig in years.

Although Christy was rushed to hospital just two weeks ago after catching an infection, Aslan member Billy McGuinness told the Irish Sun, “Christy will play that gig no matter what. It’s going to be an incredible show.”

After being rushed to hospital, doctors told Christy to lay off the live gigs – which which resulted in two concerts being cancelled in Frankfurt this month.”We didn’t want to put Christy on a plane to Germany and risk his health,” said Billy.

However, the father-of-one managed to give it his all at a sell-out show in Cork’s Opera House last Saturday, which was filmed by RTÉ.

“It’s mostly about Christy but RTE are interviewing the rest of the band next week about how Aslan have been coping with his illness,” Billy added.

Independent company Power Pictures are producing the documentary, which will also include footage from Aslan’s gig in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre back in March, as well as their upcoming headline appearance at Hillfest in Watergrasshill, Co Cork, on Sunday, June 4.
