Eoghan McDermott defends Vogue Williams after column backlash

Eoghan McDermott has defended Vogue Williams, after she received serious backlash for her comments about Muslin extremists.

In her Sunday World column two weeks ago, the Dublin beauty, who is based in the UK, discussed the recent Manchester and London terror attacks.

In her piece, she agreed with Muslim former police chief Tarique Ghaffur, who previously suggested that internment camps for radical extremists were the answer to the issue.

After the column was published, the TV presenter received “death threats” and serious hate online – and later apologised for her comments in her column a week later, but admitted that she doesn’t think she deserved the reaction she got.

Now, fellow TV presenter Eoghan McDermott has taken to his column in the Irish Sun to defend her actions.

“Last week I said Vogue Williams would do well not to ignore the whirlwind that followed her internment article,” he wrote.

“Two days later she did indeed respond, saying that she had written the piece in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, was emotional, frightened and acknowledged in hindsight that holding prisoners without trial would be a fruitless and, indeed, destructive endeavour.

“People are allowed to change their minds, get more informed and reflect, so props to Vogue for doing that.

“I do also agree with her that the default response when you disagree with someone online is to belittle, insult or threaten them, rather than engage and challenge an opposing view in a constructive way,” he explained.

“Whatever causes the ignorant behaviour of keyboard warriors, it’s time they took a step back and realised the futility of their actions. There were plenty of people taking Vogue down but few were engaging.

“The shout-down brigade is reductive and only serves to fan the mob mentality flames. Lessons for everyone,” Eoghan added.
