EXCLUSIVE! Eoghan McDermott on the importance of the Irish language

Eoghan McDermott has insisted that we may as well be British if we don’t speak the Irish language.

The 2fm host opened up to Goss.ie at the launch of Seachtain na Gaeilge (SNAG) at Facebook HQ last week.

The RTÉ presenter explained why he thought the Irish language language was important after he hosted the launch of snag, by saying “it differentiates us from other cultures”.

“I mean we may as well be English, not that there’s anything wrong with English people, but we may as well be British if we eat the same food, watch the same TV shows, speak the same language, support the same sports teams,” he said.

Speaking about the minority language, the 33-year-old broadcaster said, “It’s part of our DNA, it’s part of who we are.”

The 2fm star also thanked the Irish language for the break he got in his broadcasting career.

“It’s given me the platform to do everything I’ve ever done really because I started on TG4 and off the back of TG4 I was offered a slot ‘as Gaeilge’ on Spin radio.”

“Then from Spin I was given an English show and I was plucked from that to go to Xfm in London, and then from London I got The Voice so it all started with Irish” he added.
