Peter Coonan wishes 'all the time' his mum saw his Love/Hate success before cancer death

Love/Hate actor Peter Coonan has told of his agony at his mum not seeing his massive TV success.

The RTE star was left devastated when his mother Betty died of cancer 18 years ago – when he was just 12.

And Peter, 30, said that “all the time” he constantly thinks how he wishes she was still there to see his career highs.

He added: “It happens all the time. At the IFTAs this year. All the time.

Devastation: Peter wishes his mum had seen his success in Love/Hate

“Even the Love/Hate thing — she would have been f**king over the moon, do you know what I mean? You wouldn’t be able to hold her back!”

The Dubliner was at his Waterford boarding school when he got the call that she had passed away from cancer.

And Peter revealed that he still has extremely vivid dreams about his mum – who as an amateur actress inspired his choice of career.

He added: “I had a vivid one after she died. I was chatting to her on the phone. I was saying to her, ‘Where are you going? Where are you going?’

“She said, ‘Listen, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. Just get on with your life.’ I remember waking up after that. It’s mad. The connections are still there.

“They’re still there with you in some way. I’m not like madly religious but I do think the bond that you make with your parents is such a strong bond that it can’t just finish. It doesn’t just end.”

But Peter told the Sunday Independent that he did know she “was on the way out” – after having to process the reality that heartbreak was coming at that young age.

He added: “It wasn’t sudden,. It was long — prolonged. She was in and out of hospital from when I was about 10.

“She used to go in and get the Chemo and stuff. So, yeah, it was a kind of a long, downward slope, unfortunately.”
