George Michael has been laid to rest in a ‘small, private ceremony’

George Michael was laid to rest on Wednesday, three months after his tragic death aged 53.

A small funeral was held for close friends and family members of the iconic singer, a statement from his family confirmed.

“We can confirm that the funeral of the singer George Michael took place today,” the statement read. “Family and close friends gathered for the small, private ceremony to say goodbye to their beloved son, brother and friend.

“George Michael’s family would like to thank his fans across the world for their many messages of love and support. We ask that the family’s wish for privacy be respected so that they can continue to live their lives privately, away from any media intrusion.”

George passed away at his Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire home on Christmas Day and earlier this month it was determined that his death was due to a heart condition.

The Faith hit-maker was confirmed to have died of natural causes: Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Myocarditis and Fatty Liver, and the investigation was closed.

According to the American Heart Association Dilated Cardiomyopathy is when the heart muscle dilates and causes the chamber to enlarge, meaning the heart can’t pump blood around the body properly, while Myocarditis is an inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall.

Fatty liver is an increased buildup of fat in the liver and is very common. People who are obese or have type 2 diabetes are more at risk, but it can also be associated with heavy alcohol consumption.
