David Attenborough announces Blue Planet is coming back

David Attenborough has announced that Blue Planet is coming back.

The hit documentary was first shown in 2001 and was confirmed by the BBC that there will be a second series.

“I am truly thrilled to be joining this new exploration of the underwater worlds which cover most of our planet, yet are still its least known,” David said about Blue Planet II.

The 2001 documentary Blue Planet was “the first ever comprehensive series on the natural history of the world’s oceans,” and won Emmys for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series and Outstanding Cinematography for Non-Fiction Programming.

The new series will explore the latest frontiers of scientific discovery, from icy-white polar seas to vibrant blues of the coral atolls, from the storm-tossed green Atlantic coastline to the black depths of the alien deep.

The BBC hope the series will help highlight recent scientific discoveries, such as a new species of crab with a hairy chest, nicknamed the Hoff Crab after Baywatch’s David Hasselhoff.

Blue Planet II will be broadcast on BBC One this autumn.
